Why should you instruct me?

THE BENFITS OF INSTRUCTING ME

I am barrister with approximately 13 years experience in civil and commercial litigation.  Having previously practised as a solicitor, I am used to a close working relationship with clients, dealing with cases from the first enquiry up until their conclusion, whether by trial or settlement.

A firm of solicitors employing someone of my experience and expertise, would charge their clients upwards of £217.00 per hour for my time, often as much as £300.00 per hour.  I do not publish my rates on this website for commercial reasons but suffice to say they are considerably cheaper than the above.

I offer low and transparent rates; I usually work on a fixed fee basis, so you know exactly what you will have to pay from the outset, with no surprises.  Where I am not operating under a fixed fee arrangement, I will provide you with estimates for each stage of work and keep you informed of the costs throughout the case.

The reason that I am able to offer low rates, is because my overheads are very low; my professional indemnity insurance is provided by the Bar Mutual Indemnity Fund, which is a not for profit organisation.   I have access to a considerable range of data-bases and resources for legal research and precedents, provided for by the not for profit, Manchester Law Library.  Unlike other barristers, I do not have clerk’s fees and chambers fees to pay.

Additionally, unlike firms of solicitors I do not have an expensive case management system, a system for dictating letters, support staff or expensive professional indemnity insurance.

In many cases, clients do not need the above and can benefit from instructing a direct access barrister.  If for instance, you need a document drafted, require representation at a hearing or an advice provided, I can offer these services without the need for any of the expensive overheads referred to above.

I am authorised to conduct litigation which gives me maximum flexibility.  In some cases, I may not have the resources to conduct your case in full, in which case, I will advise you to instruct a firm of solicitors.  This would apply for instance, if your case involved large volumes of documents and a level of administrative work that would require the involvement of several junior staff.  If you instruct a firm of solicitors, you can require them to instruct me for the tasks required of counsel, including attending hearings and drafting complex documents.

However, in many cases, you do not need a firm of solicitors to conduct litigation; many of the tasks performed are administrative and could be performed by you, if you have the time and the inclination, this is known in the profession as “unbundling”.   This of course represents a considerable saving in your legal costs.  If you instruct me, I will discuss unbundling with you in detail, so that you will be able to make an informed decision about the instructions you provide.

My working arrangement just involves my clients and I, which is exactly how I like it to be.

If you contact me via joechiffers@aol.co.uk, 07786076006 or PO Box 161 Frodsham WA6 1DD, I will get back to you promptly.  In the vast majority of cases I will offer a low fixed fee quote.  No win no fee arrangements will be  considered in appropriate cases.
